U.S.S. Hornet

On our way to San Francisco, we took a quick detour to Alameda so we could tour the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Hornet. And I have to be honest ... I wasn't totally feeling it. But I kept quiet, and in the end ... boy, I'm so glad we went. Totally cool. I would love to go back and definitely spend more time there!
Some cool facts about the U.S.S. Hornet:
  1. Participated in WW II, the Vietnam War and the first moon missions.
  2. Attacked 59 times, but she was never hit by an exploding bomb, torpedo, or Kamikaze aircraft.
  3. Her pilots shot down a record 62 enemy aircraft in one day, and 255 in one month.
  4. Recovered the Apollo 11 space capsule and the first men to walk on the moon in 1969. A few months later, she also recovered the Apollo 12 and its all-Navy crew.
  5. Decommissioned on June 26, 1970.
  6. Became a public museum in 1998.

This was at the entry point on the hanger deck.

Checking out the big guns on the side of the ship.

Poor Austen ... as we went further into the ship, his phone was having trouble getting service.

The big elevator that took us up to the flight deck. Obviously, this is the elevator that would take jets up to the flight deck, as well. It was very noisy (and a little nerve-wracking, although I don't know why?), but pretty cool to experience.

Another shot of the elevator.

Up on the flight deck.
More flight deck.

Being silly ... on the flight deck.
